Economic Development
Creating economic opportunities for our people.
The Metis Settlements General Council created the an economic development function to support economic growth in the communities. The department also focuses on strategic partnerships and opportunities for job creation and growth in the eight communities. With several initiatives underway, and with the eight Settlements located in a geographical area rich with minerals, resources, agricultural lands, and more, there is tremendous potential for investment.
Harvesting & Consultation
Ensuring our indigenous rights are respected.
Maintaining our traditional ways of hunting, fishing, and gathering is of vital importance. Our people and our communities have a protected right to harvest, and to be consulted when government or industry wants to engage in activity on or around our traditional lands. The Harvesting & Consultation department engages with stakeholders to ensure our rights are maintained and that our people can benefit from development or prevent development from destroying our lands.
Training & Education
creating access to skills and education that support employability.
Generations of Metis have called the Settlements home, building what we have today. Education and training for our youth and for members in the workforce helps all of our communities succeed. Our people have an unparalleled work ethic and our training and education initiatives help members reach their full potential, achieve academically, and grow as part of a skilled workforce in Alberta.
Health Board
Supporting healthy spirits and healthy bodies in our communities.
Data consistently shows that when Indigenous peoples have more influence over how their health care is administered, outcomes improve. The Metis Settlements established the health board to create strategic partnerships within the provincial health system, develop data and resources on Metis Settlement members health outcomes to improve the system, and to assist with the delivery of health programming in the communities.
