FEDERAL COURT RULING RESPONSE STATEMENT
MSGC is pleased that the Court has recognized that Canada owed MSGC a duty to consult on the Métis Nation Within Alberta Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement. MSGC’s intention in challenging that agreement was to defend the rights and interests of Metis Settlement members and MSGC’s established rights to govern itself and speak on its own behalf.
MSGC will continue working for recognition for its members under s. 35 of the Constitution. MSGC looks forward to its ongoing work with its federal partners and the MNA to determine a way forward from this decision.
We will be reviewing the decision in the coming days to understand the full impact it may have. We will release further information as we move ahead, as necessary.
